Students have a clear-cut performance to accomplish and they are often given just one chance to get it right.  Some students are self-starters and welcome the tension this produces.  Others become shy and withdrawn or lose interest in the material.  Many times, the view which students have of “getting it” versus “not getting it” is based on the intentions the teacher puts forth.  Many teachers think in terms of students “getting” the content or “not getting” it.  Instead, “(H)elping learners embrace a more incremental perspective enables them to view learning as a process and to regard themselves as capable of advancing their own learning through effort, practice, and revision” (Wiske, Franz, and Breit, p. 83)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Teaching for understanding, according to Wiske et al., requires that the interest and experience of both learners and educator be considered when developing lesson plans.  There needs to be a focus on concepts.  The lesson plan must be constructed in such a way as to enhance student thinking on these concepts.  An environment must exist in which students can share their knowledge with others whom they trust so that they may construct their own knowledge.  Finally, lesson plans must allow for ongoing assessments of products which foster metacognition in the learners and allow each learner to become critical judges of their classmates’ products.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Teaching for understanding, then, requires an environment of mutual support.  This support comes not only from the educator but from fellow classmates.  Students need to feel comfortable communicating their viewpoint to others, whether these are classmates in the classroom or other students in far-away lands. At one local middle school, for instance, a fencing company installed a decorative fence in front of the school on which it tacked a prominent sign promoting itself.  On a national level, a cable channel, Channel One, has been able to show advertisements to teenagers under the guise of offering free educational material.  Are these companies acting ethically?  Are they within the boundaries established by the National Education Association and Consumers Union?  This organization established that building brand recognition and acting as good corporate citizens was allowable.  Selling products, however, is not.  There is a fine line between building brand recognition and selling a product.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although schools in Prince William County run site-based operations, many times they rely on central administration to establish the corporate partnerships.  Parkside Middle School, like many other schools in Prince William County, rely on the results of CMS tests to determine the level of achievement of students.  Students use Scantron sheets to record their answers.  The information from these sheets is automatically tabulated by a computer which assembles reports for administration.  In this manner, the &lt;a href="http://www.scantron.com"&gt;Scantron Company &lt;/a&gt;facilitates the measurement of student achievement in core subjects.  It is a valuable tool for measuring student progress.  Currently it is being used by our school on a weekly basis to measure students on key points tested in Math and English by the state of Virginia.  Teachers’ performance is also being assessed according to their students’ success on the CMS tests.   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Prince William County schools, along with over a dozen other school systems and private schools in the area, have teamed up with the &lt;a href="http://www.mhznetworks.org/northtier/courses"&gt;NorthTIER consortium to provide staff development opportunities to its teachers.  NorthTIER offers online classes designed to facilitate technology integration into the curriculum by training teachers in this area.  Unfortunately, this is not a service which is widely publicized in the school system.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Parkside Middle School does promote its partnership with one local company, Koons of Manassas, a car dealership.  In return for free advertisement, through mention of its company name as the sponsor, Koons supports the school’s homework hotline.  Since many students do not have access to computers at home, the school has its teachers call into the homework hotline every day so that students will not miss assignments and parents can be involved in their child’s education.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The school’s technology plan, still in draft stage, makes no mention of utilizing corporate partnerships.  There is only mention of using “vendors” to investigate  new and emerging technologies.  Perhaps there is a respect for what Richards states as the “need to be free of direct marketing to students” (LeBaron, p. 116).  Or, perhaps awareness of the debate and ensuing protests over the cable channel, Channel One, which stepped out-of-bounds by meshing corporate advertisement with educational programming. Gallaher examines the gaps and challenges which exist in urban schools having access to computers in the classroom that are wired to the Internet.  This examination is conducted in Chicago Public Shools where many schools are being modernized.  The federal E-rate program, which provides funds to assist low-income schools to build the infrastructure needed to support a LAN and to ensure Internet connectivity, is touted as a major force in this movement.  Additionally, a component of the E-rate program forces the often-neglected set-aside of certain monies for periodic computer and software upgrades.    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Although no direct examination is made of the challenges faced by rural schools, they are alluded to in the conclusion.  Here, Gallaher writes that “(N)ational surveys show that the schools least likely to have classrooms connected to the Internet are urban schools” (LeBaron &amp; Collier, p. 40).  This is corroborated by a recent article in neatoday which described the situation in rural schools as a setting where, among other things, (T)he students benefit from a low student-teacher ratio; access to technology (there’s nearly one computer for every student, all with wireless Internet connections); a built-in tutoring system…; and a sense of community” (Long, p. 38).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; On technology literacy in the teacher population, the situation described in the article is similar to that at our school.  “Even if schools are wired and have equipment, the appropriate use of these tools is not evident.  Large-scale professional development programs are not in place to change teaching styles” (LeBaron &amp; Collier, p. 35).  What is most discouraging, however, is that few of the teachers in our school see the benefit of bringing their students to the computer lab.  A quick perusal of the Computer Lab sign-up sheet reveals that it is always the same teachers who are bringing their students to the Computer Lab. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Gallaher describes the tension which exists between using funds for technology and/or technology improvements and using school funds for the more immediate benefit of securing additional personnel.  A similar situation presents itself where I teach.  Over the last couple of years a steep increase in the Hispanic population of the school has made this debate real.  On a positive note, the difficulties presented by this new reality are prompting a new openness on the part of the administration to experiment with the potential benefits offered by the use of technology. Pulkkinen and Ruotsalainen (LeBaron, 2001) examine a pilot project for on-line learning which occurred from 1996-1997 and took place in Europe.  It was primarily centered around the Lego Dacta Construction Kit involving the manipulation of Lego robots from afar.  The unusual nature of this project was that groups of distance learners were to manipulate the materials from remote locations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Problems encountered along the way are exposed.  These included lack of time, lack of guidance, unclear expectations, technical difficulties with Internet connectivity and the unreliability of the Lego lab which resulted in the latter not being used very often,  It would be easy from this article to conclude that on-line learning on an international scale is a pipe dream.  However, if one considers Clayton Christensen’s analysis of the manner in which disruptive technologies shake and eventually overtake the industries, one gains a better perspective.  In his book, The Innovator’s Dilemna, Christensen explains how new ways of doing something revolutionary at first encounter many “bugs” or “kinks” that need to be worked out.  However, over time, there is improvement to this new technology and, in time, it becomes competitive enough for the traditional way of doing things to be abandoned.  I believe that this is the case with distance or online learning.&lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt; On the other hand, there is the argument that distance learning cannot make up for the social interaction which occurs in a F2F (face-to-face) traditional environment.  In 2000, Money Magazine conducted a survey of the top Fortune 500 companies, asking top officers what they valued most in their employees.  Loyalty and interpersonal skills ranked highest.  In addition, a great deal of the literature in the field of psychology has condemned the anonymity of the Internet and the affect that it has on childrens' social skills. This raises critical questions regarding the effectiveness of teaching and learning via the Internet and the long-term effects on interpersonal communication skills (www.teAchnology.com). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; What does all of this mean for the future of distance learning?  Pulkkinen and Ruotsalainen’s conclusion, based on survey data of the participants , was that these courses work best for students who are already by nature organized self-starters.  In light of advances, this conclusion seemed rather outdated.  Today the thought is that with adequate preparation and scaffolding, all learners can be successful with on-line learning.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; To conclude, Lloyd Armstrong, provost at the University of Southern California, describes the future of on-line learning in this excellent way:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Novel, highly individualized, nonlinear pedagogical approaches and additional technological developments such as virtual reality have the  potential to enable IMDL (Internet-mediated distance learning) to bypass the traditional lecture course in terms of learning efficiency and understanding of subject. And, like other disruptive technologies, IMDL  possesses benefits not found in the dominant teaching paradigm. Among these are ease of asynchronous access, low marginal cost for additional students, opportunity to take courses from a variety of sources, and the flexibility to respond to multiple learning styles. Major efforts are being made to understand how to create virtual communities of IMDL students so as to preserve and enhance the benefits of peer interaction. The resulting experience certainly will be different from that found in the classroom of the great teacher. As the word “deliberately” connotes, a good amount of deliberation must occur before this can occur.  As the word “deliberately” denotes, a good amount of focused and determined movement is also involved.  And, in an ideal world, the deliberation will lead to the deliberate motion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; All of this implies planning.  Planning for deliberation.  Planning for the outcome of the deliberation to be set into motion.  “Planning establishes goals and sets the evaluation criteria by which they are measured.  It drives activities, shapes relationships, and provides a scaffold for a shared vision of how curriculum should promote learning” (LeBaron, 2001).  Once a shared vision has been agreed upon, all things become possible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Without a shared vision, however, an organization will flounder.  Its associates will all be pulling in a disjointed manner.  Everyone’s energies will be directed toward their own perceived aims of the organization, or, worse, their private goals.  This   diffusion of energy will, thereby, ensure the eventual failure of the organization.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; In a school environment, the first element which must be examined is what is the educational philosophy all stakeholders wish to pursue.  In order to select an appropriate philosophy, the staff, the school population, the community, the guidelines imposed by the state and the county, and the physicial restrictions imposed by the facilities, must be part of the decision.  The educational philosophy espoused will then guide budgeting, curriculum planning, and technology integration issues.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; LeBaron cites four basic educational philosophies, which he borrows from Pratt and Eisner, which can guide curricula decisions.  Essentialism, which basically holds that the focus should be on the three “Rs.”  Cultural perennialism, which holds that the school’s goal is to transmit the culture.  Individual fulfillment, which is the belief that the goal of the school should be to maximize each student’s potential.  And social transformation, which holds that the curriculum should be designed so as to change the society.  In addition, he discerns a mode of technology integration for each philosophy espoused. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; With an educational philosophy in place as the foundation of the shared vision, a perception of “what should be” is formed.  Armed with this invaluable knowledge, a survey ascertains “what is.”  To get from “what is” to “what should be” will then form the course to be pursued.  This endeavor is cyclical in nature, requiring periodic re-evaluations, so that the movement of all is channeled within the guideposts provided by the philosophy—helping to turn the theory into practice.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Internet access puts knowledge at the disposal of everyone.  “However, learning for understanding does not result simply from access to knowledge” (LeBaron, 2001).  Although use of technology can motivate and spur inquiry, this is merely a first step.  Research finds that working collaboratively on a “big theme” is most effective.  One drawback though is that there are few thematically-based lesson plans available.  Perhaps this is due to the traditional lines drawn around each subject matter.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; The Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (MCREL) knows the value of standards in teaching and learning content.  “Clear standards provide clearer expectations for students and the possibility of better communication among teachers, administrators, parents, and the larger community. Without such a common format, even the basics of a school system can break down” (Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning, 2006).  MCREL is planning to find commonality in the various subjects’ standards and raising them all to an equal footing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Students are stakeholders—the largest stakeholders—in schools.  As such, they should have a voice in planning for the school’s shared and evolving vision.  This will spur them on to taking control of their own learning, to formulating their own personal plans for growth.  They should be guided with clear standards.  Having a stake in their education, insisting that technology be accessible to them, and constantly re-evaluating “what they should know” and “what they know,” students will join the ranks of other stakeholders in planning for technology integration in our schools.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sources&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;LeBaron, J. and Collier, C. First, how can the material be introduced in a manner that will generate interest and thus engage the students?  Second, how can students go beyond being cognizant of the learning goals the teachers have set for them and actually internalize them?  Third, how can students authentically demonstrate their internalization of the goals?  Fourth, what role can technology play in enhancing student understanding?  Finally, how does it meet the state, local and national laws as they pertain to the No Child Left Behind legislation enacted in 2002?  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Chapter 3 of Wiske’s Teaching for understanding with technology, an elementary school teacher elicits excitement about patterns and symbols through the use of quilt blocks as a new one is posted each day to form a pattern.  Students keep a photo journal which documents their observations and class discussions.  The thought processes elicited by the journaling helps students develop the mentality of a mathematician.  This is an excellent way for students to realize metacognition.  In addition, a website allows students to share their work with their parents.  Involving parents is always beneficial.  Not only does this allow for parents to be drawn into the learning process, it also allows them to see the value of providing schools with the technology to make such an interaction possible.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Chapter 4, a water habitat project is described wherein elementary students record field data at a local city park and go on to share their data through a global project.  Students are naturally engaged by the project due to its physical proximity to their lives and they value accurately recording their findings since it will go beyond the school’s walls.  Crucial in developing the lesson plan is for the teacher’s “understanding” goals to be made explicit.  Understanding goals allow students “to make connections, create a solution, or apply knowledge in a new context.  Another important feature of understanding goals is that they define coherent connections between any lesson or learning activity and broader overarching goals” (Wiske, Franz, and Breit, 2005).  This is echoed by Wiggins and McTighe in their book, Understanding by Design, where they write:  “…teacher-designers must help students uncover not just facts or concepts but the big ideas” (Wiggins, and McTighe, 1998).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Chapter 5,  students virtually team up with other classrooms to develop the concept of caring through their art and writing.  This exchange culminates in a Global Art Show.  Students communicate worldwide—sometimes impeded by the language barrier.  Fortunately, though, art can often be understood without the benefit of translated documentation as art is a language unto itself.  As the authors write:  “(B)y collaborating beyond the context of their own classroom, students gain a deeper understnading of universal relevance and varied interpretations….” (Wiske, Franz, and Breit, 2005).  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is interesting that in all of these learning situations, the assessment has not been formal—or at least not formally described.  This is in direct contradiction to the strict testing requirements devised by the federal government in light of the No Child Left Behind Act.  As a matter of fact, on a U.S. Department of Education website, it is written that:  “Too many of our nation's schools have not measured up because our measures for success have been ineffective. That's why under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which passed the U.S. Congress with strong bipartisan support, states are required to use a method of measuring student progress that teachers use in their classrooms every day—testing” (www.nclb.gov, 2003).  None of the anecdotes above mention formal testing—much less the type recommended by the government.  Indeed, such formal testing would seem anathema to all manner of “deep” understanding that students achieve as a result of the projects described above.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In my quest to offer activities which bring students to a deeper understanding, not only of the material, but of the overarching goals, I have concluded that it first and foremost needs to “grab” the student’s attention.  Another fashion in which to lure students into a project is to offer them the freedom of choice.  Therefore, I have opted to engage students in the design of a Webquest relating to a cultural topic of their choice--within the purview of the curriculum’s coverage.  Development of the Webquest would need to be guided by a rubric and an explicit statement of overarching goals for the project.  Research would need to be conducted using the Internet. The question of technology access, therefore, has shifted from a question commonly referred to as the “digital divide” to a question of what knowledge should be made available to students.  In considering this question, schools or school districts have had to put policies and procedures into place.  In addition, many schools—as have many public libraries which offer Web-browsing service to the public—have opted to purchase expensive, and oftentimes wrongfully restrictive, software filters.  Technology access now primarily examines the who, what, when, where, and how of culling material from the Internet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; “Technology is interpreted as process, not merely in terms of hardware (such as computers or television or projectors), but in terms of learners and their relationship to the people, events, places, and things through which they learn.” (Peck, 1989)  This appears to be the crux of this article.  Although schools establish policies, which set the basic parameters of how appropriate conduct is defined, and procedures, which deal with the application of the policies on a more detailed level, these can be as limiting and self-defeating as the filtering softwares used.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Prince William County, for example, has blocking software which bans searches of such innocuous terms as “relationship” or “fidelity.”  Friel writes in her article, “Using Technology Appropriately:  Policy, Leadership, and Ethics,” that “(B)ecause censorship is subjective, however, perhaps the best way to approach Internet use is to stress guidance rather than censorship” (LeBaron, 2001).  And perhaps it is this vision, of technology as process—and not as a mechanism which must be impeded—which would allow it to be simultaneously productive and liberating.      &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Many schools, as part of their Code of Behavior, have put into place policies and   procedures regarding computer usage.  By outlining what is considered inappropriate use of computers, and setting up procedures for discovering and dealing with offenses, school administrators can be smug in the knowledge that their work is done.  For instance, in Prince William County, students may not use the e-mail or instant messaging features which have become an integral part of computers' societal and social functions.  Unfortunately, many worthwhile projects cannot be undertaken because of this restriction.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Language Arts teachers carry the bulk of the burden of implementing the Virginia Computer/Technology Standards of Learning.  In Prince William County this load is primarily shouldered by 8th and 11th grade-level English teachers who guide students in writing research papers.  Part of the mandate is to educate students on the issue of plagiarism, explicitly defined in the County’s Code of Behavior as cheating.  The policy reads:  “(C)heating includes the giving or receiving of a computer file, programs, part of a program, or other computer-based information without specific teacher direction or approval” (Code of Behavior, 2006).  To ensure that cheating is not occurring, students are asked to read information found on the Internet and write about it in their own words on three by five notecards, citing the source on the card with its specific location. It is reported that this exercise only moderately stems the “cutting and pasting” behavior so prevalent among students.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perhaps our task as educators should be to arm students with a vision, to lift students beyond the immediacy of the search or task-at-hand.  Students know they are only offered part of the power of computers.  Perhaps this leads many to feelings of disenfranchisement.  Perhaps this explains why policies and procedures are constantly being challenged in an attempt to play with or uncover computers' untapped potential.  Naturally students must be alerted to the potential danger zones. This distinction prompted me to examine the principals I have known in a new light.  Light was directed on whether these principals were happy with the status quo or placed a priority on technology integration.   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Making technology integration a priority is key.   Once the principal has promulgated this vision, and enlisted the support of key teachers who are opinion leaders among their peers, there is a snowball effect.  These opinion leaders are able to mobilize the rest of the staff to embrace the principal’s vision.  A review of the first post points out that VISION is the first of nine principles required for effective leadership in technology integration.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once the vision has been promulgated by the principal, it must be embraced by opinion leaders who carry it to the rest of the staff.  However, these opinion leaders must also be empowered.  It is crucial that an infrastructure be put into place that will allow the teacher leaders to meet, to develop a strategy, to provide for teacher training, to eliminate the naysayers, and to celebrate each incremental change as a victory.  (Naturally, these celebrations should not be so elaborate as to stop progress for all to sit on their laurels.)  All of these moves will ensure that the vision becomes part of the institution.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chapter 8&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Isa Zimmerman makes the important point that the vision needs to come from the top, namely the state governor.  Also, Zimmerman is the first author I have come across to give a role in the vision to students.  An example is given of high schoolers sponsoring a teacher-training.  How wonderful is that!  Indeed, I often learn best from my own students!  Zimmerman is also forward-thinking in noting that school boards must devote more energy towards bringing local businesses into the mix.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unlike Perry and Areglado, who believe that teachers should be coaxed into the vision via opinion leaders in their ranks, Zimmerman believes that the vision for technology integration should be imposed upon them.  This imposition would merely come in the form of teachers’ annual performance evaluation.  It is ironic that for one advocating the use of politics by school systems for building public support, teachers are not considered part of the political equation. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In evaluating our school system’s efforts in promulgating a vision for technology integration, I found administration sorely lacking in this area.  Only one school—an elementary school at that—was found to have a website on which their school technology mission statement was listed with a three-year goal for teacher training and integration of technology into the curriculum. It can probably be first traced back to the Russian’s launching of Sputnik.  Sputnik brought about an awakening in scholarly circles, fueled by fear, that shook the foundations of the educational establishment.  “New” approaches were welcomed.  A similar wave of reform has since been instituted which seeks to embrace new technologies into the curriculum.  Wiske, in her book, &lt;em&gt;Teaching for Understanding with Technology&lt;/em&gt;, attempts to do that.  She offers a framework to be considered which appears to piggyback Jerome Bruner’s educational theory and Wiggins and McTighe’s &lt;em&gt;Understanding by Design&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Wiske introduces a Teaching for Understanding framework.  This framework is divided into five key topics designed to evaluate the usefulness of a specific technology or a panoply of technology tools.  The steps to consider are: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• What are the generative topics?&lt;br /&gt;• What are the understanding goals?&lt;br /&gt;• What are the performances of understanding?&lt;br /&gt;• How do we produce ongoing assessment?&lt;br /&gt;• How do we form reflective, collaborative communities?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Generative topics&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Ideally interest in the material to be learned is the best stimulus to learning, rather than such external goals as grades or later competitive advantage… it is nonetheless worth considering how interest in learning per se can be stimulated.” (Bruner, 1978)  These are usually a cross-curricular, real-life topic that the teacher is intrigued by.  The idea here is that enthusiasm is contagious and for the students to become engaged, the teacher needs to be engaged first. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Understanding Goals&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These “focus on key concepts and disciplined ways of thinking, not just on the isolated facts and formulas that form the core of many traditional teaching materials” (Wiske, 2005).  Wiggins and McTighe define “understanding” as meaning “that a student has something more thant just textbook knowledge and skill—that a student really ‘gets it’” (Wiggins and McTighe, 1998).    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Performances of Understanding&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These are best described by Jerome Bruner in his famous book, The Process of Education:  “(T)he schoolboy learning physics is a physicist, and it is easier for him to learn physics behaving like a physicist than doing something else” (Bruner, 1978)  New software tools allow the student-physicist to immerse himself/herself into the role and to illustrate his/her knowledge through “performance.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ongoing Assessment&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Best described in &lt;em&gt;Understanding by Design &lt;/em&gt;by Wiggins and McTighe who write that “the assessment of understanding should be thought of in terms of a collection of evidence over time instead of an event—-a single moment-in-time test at the end of instruction—-as so often happens in current practice (Wiggins and McTighe, 1998).  Creating e-portfolios, posting to websites, querying experts or fellow students are all new ways of assessing only recently made possible through the advent of technology.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reflective, Collaborative Communities&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;em&gt;Computers as mindtools for schools&lt;/em&gt;, Jonassen cites a study by Harasim, author of &lt;em&gt;Online education:  An environment for collaboration and intellectual amplification&lt;/em&gt;, which found that “learners perceive themselves as reflecting more on their thoughts while computer conferencing than when engaged in face-to-face or telephone conversation” (Jonassen, 2000).  No doubt the interaction that the Worldwide Web affords learners is very engaging.  In addidtion, the solitary moments spent formulating one’s thoughts before transmitting them through Cyberspace are moments of self-reflection intertwined with moments of collaboration. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sources&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bruner, J. Sputnik brought about an awakening in scholarly circles, fueled by fear, that shook the foundations of the educational establishment.  “New” approaches were welcomed.  A similar wave of reform has since been instituted which seeks to embrace new technologies into the curriculum.  Wiske, in her book, Teaching for Understanding with Technology, attempts to do that.  She offers a framework to be considered which appears to piggyback Jerome Bruner’s educational theory and Wiggins and McTighe’s &lt;em&gt;Understanding by Design&lt;/em&gt; writings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Wiske introduces a Teaching for Understanding framework.  This framework is divided into five key topics designed to evaluate the usefulness of a specific technology or a panoply of technology tools.  The steps to consider are: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• What are the generative topics?&lt;br /&gt;• What are the understanding goals?&lt;br /&gt;• What are the performances of understanding?&lt;br /&gt;• How do we produce ongoing assessment?&lt;br /&gt;• How do we form reflective, collaborative communities?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Generative topics&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Ideally interest in the material to be learned is the best stimulus to learning, rather than such external goals as grades or later competitive advantage… it is nonetheless woth considering how interest in learning per se can be stimulated.” (Bruner, 1978)  These are usually a cross-curricular, real-life topic that the teacher is intrigued by.  The idea here is that enthusiasm is contagious and for the students to become engaged, the teacher needs to be engaged first. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Understanding Goals&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These “focus on key concepts and disciplined ways of thinking, not just on the isolated facts and formals that form the core of many traditional teaching materials” (Wiske, 2005).  Wiggins and McTighe define “understanding” as meaning “that a student has something more thant just textbook knowledge and skill—that a student really ‘gets it’” (Wiggins and McTighe, 1998).    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Performances of Understanding&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These are best described by Jerome Bruner in his famous book, The Process of Education:  “(T)he schoolboy learning physics is a physicist, and it is easier for him to learn physics behaving like a physicist than doing something else” (Bruner, 1978)  New software tools allow the student-physicist to immerse himself/herself into the role and to illustrate his/her knowledge through “performance.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ongoing Assessment&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Best described in &lt;em&gt;Understanding by Design &lt;/em&gt;by Wiggins and McTighe who write that “the assessment of understanding should be thought of in terms of a collection of evidence over time instead of an event—a signle moment-in-time test at the end of instruction—as so often happens in current practice (Wiggins and McTighe, 1998).  Creating e-portfolios, posting to websites, querying experts or fellow students are all new ways of assessing only recently made possible with the advent of technology.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reflective, Collaborative Communities&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Computers as mindtools for schools, Jonassen cites a study by Harasim, author of &lt;em&gt;Online education:  An environment for collaboration and intellectual amplification&lt;/em&gt;, which found that “learners perceive themselves as reflecting more on their thoughts while computer conferencing than when engaged in face-to-face or telephone conversation” (Jonassen, 2000).  No doubt the interaction that the Worldwide Web affords learners is very engaging.  In addidtion, the solitary moments spent formulating one’s thoughts before transmitting them through cyberspace are moments of self-reflection intertwined with moments of collaboration. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sources&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bruner, J. Oftentimes one does not consider that in researching, one is evaluating not only the information at hand, but periodically detaching oneself from the process in order to evaluate this process.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3.   Role-playing and collaboration are essential to deep understanding.  “From their investigations students learned to describe the past through the eyes of those who were there” (LeBaron, Collier, 2001).  This quote from Debbie Abilock is the key to a constructivist view where learning is subjective but where, with the aid of others, one gradually places oneself in another’s shoes. ENJOY!&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Brigitte&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;For those who wish to read along as they listen to the Audioblog, below is the text:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Welcome to my audioblog.  This is Brigitte Melton speaking.&lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;This audioblog is designed for Dr. Coffman’s class on Leadership in Educational Technology at the University of Mary Washington.  Dr. Coffman’s assignment asks for a review of Knowledge Loom’s nine principles of effective leadership in technology integration.  The Knowledge Loom website was developed by the Education Alliance at Brown University.  Funded by the Institute for Education Sciences in the U. S. Department of Education,  Knowledge Loom was designed by educators for educators.  Its purpose is to disseminate success stories in the area of technology integration. The  Education Alliance is eager for our success stories too.  Perhaps one day our stories will be part of the &lt;a href="http://knowledgeloom.org/practices3.jsp?location=1&amp;bpinterid=1050&amp;spotlightid=1050"&gt;Knowledge Loom website&lt;/a&gt;.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first of the  nine principles is Vision.  Leaders have it.  Nothing can go forward and be successful without it.  Homage is paid to Apple Computer’s Classrooms of Tomorrow Model introduced in 1985.  The five steps teachers go through in learning to integrate technology into their instruction are entry, adoption, adaptation, appropriation, and innovation.  So, basically, just like anything new, you approach it carefully and when you finally embrace it, you’re ready to become creative with it.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The second principle is Planning.  The four steps are building the technology plan, obtaining the resources, implementing the plan, and finally, evaluating it.  &lt;br /&gt;Access is the third principle.  Connectivity, ubiquitousness, interconnectivity, and equitable distribution are all important.  For example, in 2000, the urban ratio of computers to students was 16 to 1, versus 7 to 1 in rural areas.&lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;Integration is the fourth.  Jack Mara, Associate Superintendent for the Maine Schools Administrative District, said that “administrators are the gatekeepers of everything,” and technology can never be fully integrated without their support, but  teacher enthusiasm is a runner-up.  In order to develop enthusiasm, teachers need training, incentives for participating, public recognition, and support in their schools, both technical and moral. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fifth principle is Assessment and Evaluation.  The general consensus is that technology use does better student performance on standardized tests.  However, the implications for new forms of assessment are where the focus should be.  Technology allows teachers to archive student’s work through electronic portfolios, chart student progress, get instant feedback, etc.   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Support is the sixth.  Support goes a long way toward generating teacher enthusiasm.  Fortunately, our school has two state-funded positions that provide one person to ensure that the hardware works smoothly and another person offering in-house training and guidance so that we can breathe life into the curriculum through technology.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The seventh principle is Training.  According to the U.S. Department of Education, schools should use 30% of their technology budgets for teacher training.  The reality is that it’s more likely just a third of that.  The focus of the training should be on technology integration.  Basic skills are essential but most teachers work on their own time to develop these. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The eighth principle is Community Relationships.  Many grants require partnerships with local businesses.  Also, experts in the community can be invaluable to schools.  Establishing schools as Community Access Centers allows those with no access to computers their only link to a networked society.  Our school offers this program and it’s exciting to see parents get excited when navigating the Web.  This experience will translate into future support for plans to expand technology integration in our school. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The ninth and final principle is Ethical Issues.  Following legislative edicts related to intellectual property rights, accessibility issues, or confidentiality related to student records are all part of this.  Establishing acceptable use of the Internet by students should also involve teaching them Netiquette.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I’ll end this audioblog by urging you to look at the &lt;a href="http://knowledgeloom.org/practice_story.jsp?t=1&amp;bpid=1069&amp;storyid=1155&amp;aspect=2&amp;location=3&amp;parentid=1050&amp;bpinterid=1050&amp;spotlightid=1050"&gt;Maryville Middle School&lt;/a&gt; in Tennessee.  This is one of the success stories on the Knowledge Loom site.  In this model school, where the ratio of students to computers is less than 4 to 1, learning is active.  Students identify real-life problems and apply the STARS method to examine them.  STARS stands for Students Thinking, Analyzing, Researching, and Solving.  In addition, teachers, students, and the community all take part in the learning. In my opinion, Maryville Middle School meets all of the nine leadership principles for educational technology.
